Sivasagar Discovery
There is definitely some history of every place in the world
and that begins at some very particular spots.
The beautiful north-eastern state Assam has also its great
historical stories, which was first written in a very special place of the
state, known today by Sivasagar.
A beautiful and glorious destination with some of its amazing
historical importance, built during the Ahom age of medieval Assam.
In older days it was known by ‘Rangpur’. In Assamese ‘Rang’
means happiness and ‘Pur’ means a place. In one word ‘Rangpur’ was a place of
happiness.
Older days Ahom organized various delightful activities in Rangpur
on some very special occasions.

Here Rongali
Bihu
and Bhogali Bihu festivals were the two most significant. Bihu dance, Human
wrestling, Buffalo fight, Bulbul birds fight were so popular activities among
all.
However, these delightful things are still organized today even
after 200 years of their ruling end.
Here Rang Ghar is incredibly famous for all these
activities. This is the first pavilion of Asia, which was built in between
1744-1750 by the most successful king of Ahom kingdom, Pramatta Singha.
He also made some other greatest construction that we have
seen today; here Kareng Ghar is highly famous.
Best known as the Gargaon Palace, this is situated 16 km
away from the Sivasagar main town.
This was the 2nd most static capital of Ahom
kingdom after they moved from Charaideo and remained till 1769.
In 1769, the capital moved again to Sibsagar. Today this is
popular as ‘Talatal Ghar’, located western part of Sibsagar main town.
Ahom kings were very conscious of the security matters,
therefore Talatal Ghar was highly developed as a secure base.
Probably many people don’t know, there were two underground
ways made in the very bottom of Talatal Ghar.
One way reached to their old capital Kareng Ghar, which is
situated 16 km away at Gargaon and other was to Dikhow River, which also
situated 7 km away from it.
Although today these two ways are closed due to heavy
clay jam.
Have you ever heard that Sibsagar is the city of temples? Over
30-50 most shining temples, built during Ahom age at different parts of this
district.
They are especially Shiva temple, Devi Durga Temple, Vishnu
temple, Joydol, Sri Sri Sani temple, and Gaurisagar Gauri temple, etc.
The Shiva temple is famous around the whole of India, due to
its shocking structure and beautiful design. In 1734, Bor Raja Ambika the wife
of Swargadeo Siba Singha built this amazing structure.
It sounds quite wired at present but do you know which
materials were used to build it?
It wasn’t like as the cement or concert we use today. The
materials were Bora rice (sticky rice) and Duck egg; sounds fictional but
absolutely true.
This temple passed 286 long years but shockingly it still
standing and showing the dignity of the powerful Ahom’s architectural
intelligence.
Behind this Shiva temple, there is a giant pond located in.
This was also a great creation of queen Ambika.
Today this pond is popular as ‘Sivasagar large tank’ or ‘Sivasagar
Borpukhuri’. Do you know my friend; this is one of the largest human-made tanks
in Asia.
Apart from history, Sivasagar is highly rich in natural
beauty and various cultural elements. Just as Jorhat is called the cultural
city of Assam state, Sivasagar has also a unique identity in this cultural
field too.
Tea tourism is another fastest growing concept here. The
beautiful tea gardens always have been attracting travel gigs to come here for
once.
On the other hand places like Borhill, Pani Dihing wildlife
sanctuary, Dikhow, and Dichang mukh always compatible with planning a stunning picnic
party.
Do you this is the home of multiple tribal communities of
Assam? Including Ahom, Chutia, Koch,
Kachari, Mishing, Deori there are around 47 tribal communities live in. So, in
that case, this is heaven to study Assam’s or north-eastern anthropology.
However, this same cause making the culture of the state more
prosperous and more beautiful. Visit here once a while, you will definitely love
it.
[P.S: sometimes we get confused between the two words,
‘Sivasagar’ and ‘Sibsagar’. There is nothing confusing here. Sivasagar stands
for the whole district and Sibsagar is only for the main town of it]
